Myofunctional Therapy With Ameera
Breathe better · Sleep better · Grow better
About Me
Ameera Sulaman was born in Durban, South Africa. She graduated from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal as a Dental Therapist in 2021. She continued her education in Myofunctional Therapy through the American Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy.
After matriculating in 2018, Ameera began teaching Maths and English at KUMON Musgrave after completing her training.
Through her work she observed open mouth posture in her students. Her qualification in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy made her realise that mouth breathing in various children needed to be urgently addressed.

What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional Therapy uses exercises to retrain the tongue, lips, and facial muscles for healthy breathing, swallowing, and oral function.
If your child shows any of the signs above, therapy can address the underlying causes—not just the symptoms.
It helps with:
Snoring, sleep-disordered breathing, mouth breathing
Tongue ties, lip ties
TMJ pain, teeth grinding, jaw/posture issues
Speech clarity, orthodontic relapse, tongue tie recovery
Oral habits (thumb sucking, nail biting)
Allergies, reflux, drooling, bedwetting, recurring ear infections
Therapy Goals:

Warms and humidifies air
Reduces sinus infections

Supports correct facial and dental development
Tongue Ties Don’t Only Affect Speech
- Breastfeeding challenges
- Eating (picky eaters)
- Teeth (crooked teeth, narrow arches)
- Jaw & airway development (snoring, grinding)
- Facial growth (retruded lower jaw)
Speech & Myofunctional Milestones (Ages 1–7):
1–2 yrs:
- Starts saying first words, follows simple instructions, enjoys back-and-forth play.
Check if no words by 18 mo, no gestures, constant open mouth, or drooling → may indicate weak oral muscles or tongue tie.
3–4 yrs:
- Uses short sentences (3–5 words), speech mostly understood, asks questions.
Check if unclear speech, avoids talking, nasal/monotone voice, or drooling → may relate to mouth breathing or low tongue posture.
5–7 yrs:
- Clear speech, full sentences, retells stories.
Check if stuttering, lisping (“s,” “r,” “l”), hoarse/nasal voice, or open-mouth posture → may signal poor oral tone or incorrect tongue placement.

Patient Feedback
My 6 year old son has been doing myofunctional therapy with Ameera for almost a year, and the results have been amazing. After discovering a tongue tie that was affecting his speech, we started therapy and his clarity has improved significantly, he’s now more aware of tongue placement and progressing each week. Even his speech therapist has noticed the improvement. Ameera makes sessions fun with games, and my son loves going.

We have had the pleasure of working with Ameera to improve our daughters speech. Using the combination of myofunctional therapy, myobraces and the froggy device, she has improved her swallowing, nose breathing, as well as sleeping patterns over and above her improvement in speech which in turn is improving her self confidence. Ameera has been gracious and patient over zoom sessions and a great help and inspiration for our 13 year old.
